This spacesuit was worn by astronaut and mission Commander Alan Shepard
during the Apollo 14 mission in January 1971. Apollo 14 was the third
lunar landing during which the astronauts explored the Fra Mauro Highlands.
The International Latex Corporation designed and constructed the spacesuit
in the configuration for extra-vehicular activities, with the NASA
designation ofA-7L. When combined with the portable life support system
and other components making up the extravehicular mobility unit, the suit
weighed approximately 82 kilograms (180 pounds) here on Earth.
NASA transferred the suit to the National Air and Space Museum in 1971.
